I have set-up to network my Desktop PC, running Ubuntu, with my XP laptop. I can access my Ubuntu folders from my XP laptop, no problem. However, I cannot access my XP folders that are on my laptop from within Ubuntu (Desktop PC) – keep getting an error messages, that basically say 'that I do not have the required permissions, etc'. Is there any way I can rectify this ,so as to access the XP folders that are on the laptop from within Ubuntu.? I can see all the icons for the folders – but when I click on them, I get the said error messages. Thanks in advance, David.
I think the only way would be to seup a SAMBA share. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SettingUpSamba https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MountWindowsSharesPermanently?highlight=(windows) Ubuntu can't access XP on network - Ubuntu Forums
I need to do this too. Either that or plug a hdd into my router but people here recommend buying a new router and a box to plug my hdd into. Its gonna end up costing hundreds! I dont understand the step by step instructions! What is the hostname? and domain name? I think I know the workgroup.... is it the workgroup windows is set to? I had to do that when I set up the windows -> windows network. Its workgroup! Then further down in the instructions it asks for a username and password. What username and password? I dont have any username and passwords! Do I need to make a user on the windows system for the linux pc? I think thats how I did the dcc connection but the dcc connection kind of "dials up!", when I shared windows->windows I just right clicked my partition and pressed share to all.
Hi, Zeus. Yes, all the instructions baffle me as well! I'm a total newbie to networking but I've managed to set-up a network of sorts. I can only tell you what I did and hope it helps: Okay, I network my XP laptop with my Ubuntu installation on my Desktop PC. Firstly, I run XP's Network Set-UP Wizard from the XP laptop, turning on the printer beforehand that is hooked up to the Desktop. At the end of the Network Set-UP Wizard, it will ask you if you want to run the wizard on another computer (in my case, this would be the Desktop running Ubuntu). Answer 'NO' and close the wizard. I would next, go into Ubuntu on the Desktop and open up 'Sharing' and pick the Ubuntu folders I want to share with the laptop running XP. Electing to use Samba (which enables file sharing with Windows machines). Next, you need to set-up a 'Samba' password and username. You do this by opening up a terminal from the Ubuntu desktop. Type: sudo smbpasswd -a ***** (where ***** will be the the username you use on Ubuntu. For example: I would type sudo smbpasswd -a david you will be prompted for your password – again, this will be your Ubuntu log-on password. You then get the option to create a new 'Samba password'. Enter which ever password you want to use – I used my Ubuntu log-on password, but you can use any password (just remember it!). Next, go to your machine that is running XP and go to 'My Network Places'. Go to Ubuntu server and double click on it. You will be prompted for a username and password (In my case, again this would be 'david = username, then my password would be my Ubuntu log-on password, So, 'password' = what I use to log- on to Ubuntu with. Having done all this, I should now be able to access my nominated Ubuntu folders from my laptop and share the printer which is hooked-up to the Ubuntu desktop PC (which I can!). Having said all that, I still can't access my XP laptop's folders from the Ubuntu desktop PC. However, I can send files between the 2 machines through using The Ubuntu server, which will show up on both the XP laptop and the Ubuntu desktop PC. It's a bit of a 'dog's breakfast' as far as networking goes, but at least you could say, I have half a network, which is better than none! It seems to be an 'access permissions' issue with not being able to access the XP laptop's folders from the Ubuntu desktop PC, but I've tried many ways to correct this, but I'm drawing blanks all the time. Anyway, I hope this has been of some help to you. David.
no, it won't, USB HDD enclosure & router BTW: these arn't the cheapest either, just the first one's i found Edit: i've being trying to network my Kubuntu box with a VM Edit: networking is not funny
Ive finally managed to get to my files on the windows 2000 pc. I followed these instructions...... https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MountWindowsSharesPermanently And I added a user on the windows machine with the same username and password as my xubuntu login details. These I added to the .smbpassword file. Its simply there in my home folder.
