Hi there,

I have just 'built' a new computer (on a budget) and against all odds (its my first time!) IT WORKS!!!!!

I have an annoying problem though..... Whenever the computer appears to be busy the screen will go blank for a second or so.
It boots fine but when the desktop first appears I get a box about 'ULI' for a split second and it goes blank then comes back a second or so latter. When I update my antivirus software while installing the screen will go blank for a second then come back seven or eight times in the space of thirty seconds. It is just so damn frustrating.

The system specs are as follows: (bare in mind this is my first time)

Intel Celeron D 2.93Ghz
Asrock 775Twins-HDTV with onboard ATI Radeon X300 based graphics
80GB Hitachi SATA Hard Drive
80GB Western Digital IDE Hard drive (from my old computer) as secondary
DirectX 9.0 VGA
Onboard Realtek ALC850 7.1 channel audio
512Mb PC3200 Ram
Windows XP Home edition

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

it sound as though either the monitor being a pillock, try a different monitor (known working), if that monitor does the same you know your screen's ok

next reseat everything (RAM, grfx card & CPU) and retry it

then try another grfx card

and when it works, the part you have in you hand is the problem, if reseating didn't work

Hmm, this is something I have not yet come across, try some basic troubleshooting and maybe implement a trial and error strategy. Firstly, if it’s convenient, replace your monitor, maintaining your current hardware setup and initial configuration. If this fails, go back to the drawing board, open your case and strip all unnecessary components from the motherboard, using an Anti Static Wrist strap to earth yourself from EDS (Electro Static Discharge), we wouldn't want you to damage anything. Boot your computer with only the essential computer components, If you have an onboard graphics accelerator, you can be free to take out your GPU also. Rebuild your system, gradually adding components until your fault appears. If the fault dissolves, great, if not, draw your attention to the last component you installed before the fault reappeared. To shine a light on something else, just double check the message isn't software related, i.e. a program you are unaware of booting during start up. I hope I have been of some assistance, good luck.

I've treid another monitor. Same problem....
Tried reseating everything. Same problem...
I've downloaded the latest drivers for the ATI Radeon Xpress 200 chipset from their website (Catalyst Control Centre version 1.2.2271.39125) and still the same problem.

I also get a CLI (Command Line Interface) error saying it has encountered a problem and needs to close when I open the Catalyst Control centre application.

I can play DVDs with no problem. Streaming graphics appear fine its just this occassional problem where the screen appears to shutting down and then restarts after a second or so.

Is this suggsetive of a graphics chip fault and would a separate graphics card solve it (dont want to fork out for a new card if it wont solve the problem).

just discovered that you need to download and install MS .NET Framework 1.1 for Catalist to run, your probably also getting an error message on boot saying something like "application didn't initialize (0xc0000135) exiting" if you can ignore it, its safe to do so, or if you want to fix it download and install .NET Framework

I did download the MS.Net Framework before I downloaded the driver. I don't get any other error messages at all????

the only reason i knew how to sort it was because, i was having SLI errors too and catylist wouln't run and i remembered (either at download of installation) something about it requireing .NET

i'm using a Radeon 7K
