Though there's not much point of this thread as I just ordered the parts with him online I just thought I'd let you all know what's cookin'.

His budget was about $1100 and he basically wanted to play FIFA soccer 2k6 and Calll of Duty 2. So I picked out the following.

    AMD Athlon 3200+
    Sapphire Fireblade Edition X800GTO (PCIe)
    Samsung Floppy Drive
    NEC dual layer optical drive
Case that looked good for under $50 (probably pics later)
    Hitachi SATA2 160GB HDD
    Quiet Gigabyte Cooling fan
ASRock dual SATA mobo with AGP and PCIe
    Some Creative modem
    Logitech keyboard/mouse combo
    Logitech X-230 2.1 speakers
    Coolmax 550wt PSU 35A
CLT brand CRT 17" monitor (better than it sounds)
    OCz Performance Series ram 2x512MB
Creative Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit Sound Card

It's not going to break any records but with a little overclock I'd say he'll be pretty good to go with his little gaming rig. Hope the build goes okay, should bet it around monday or so I suppose.

i'd rather see you get a WD or seagate drive if you've got that kind of cash to spend

Yeah the Fireblade edition cards have beefy coolers and FireBlade overclocking software which is apparently very good.

I looked at some Seagate and WD HDD's but for the price this was the best bang for the buck. Better ratings from customers and faster seek times (by a tiny bit). I trust Hitachi, hasn't let me down yet.
