Hello Guys:
I need some info on buying a new computer,Wal-Mart is now selling Dell computers,would this be the way to go,they come with Vista Windows operating system,how reliable is this new Windows system or should I buy a computer with an XP operating system???? all help will be greatly appreciated---Delbert
 
You will proabably be getting mixed reviews with XP vs Vista. My personal opinion is that I would stick with XP until there is a reason why you would want to have Vista. I am a gamer and I do not have any plans to move to Vista in the near future (The DX10 games that I would play are not going to be out for another year or so).

Also, Could you give us a price range that you are looking at and what you are planning to do with it?

I am a fan of building your own computer, depending on your price range and computer skills, you could potientially save money and get a more powerful system

As for where you buy it, I would goto the manfacturers website and order it right off of there, that is, if you choose not to go the "build your own computer" method.

Thanks for the info, in the past I have built my own computers from the ground up,but the mother board may be out of date by now,

SYSTEM MEMORY---512 MB--pc 3200 ddr-Sdram

optical drive--lite-on ctr 523275(52x/32x/52x CD-RW
HARD DRIVE Seagate 40 gb

I very seldom play games with the computer,used mainly for information and planning prospecting trips using my GPS receiver and downloading maps of the area of interest,I would like to use google satellite maps but must have Windows XP to download them.

Do you think it would be a better solution to get an xp upgrade and install it over my windows 98SE?????

Another thing my mother board is lacking is a Firewire connection so I can download the tapes from my mini dv camcorder and put the video on a web site-- do they have firewire adapters???

For what you use your computer for, I would suggest looking at the Dell Dimension series.

I would say its probably better just to go the full way and get a new computer, I would look at the "Versatile PCs" line of the Dimension series. They start at about $380 (W/o monitor)

It doesn't seem like you use your computer for anything that is very performance demanding. Dell only offers Windows Vista, Which is going to be a huge change coming from 98 - Im not a huge fan of Vista, but I would say if your program(s) support it, then go for it! Worst possible outcome is you uninstall and go to XP.

As for just upgrading to XP... It might be better to do a clean install.. A few years ago I had some issues with two customers upgrading to XP from 98. Your current computer would be able to handle XP(may be a bit laggy at times), you might not have all the eye-candy, but nether the less it would still support it.

As for a "firewire adapter" there is a PCI Firewire card for 11 dollars. As long as you have a spare PCI slot you will be all set.
