    Two possible reasons for this:

    1. The slot can only take upto 256MB module.
    2. The RAM is ECC, or registered or buffered (or all three) and the mobo cannot work with them.

Have you got the computers documentation?
If you have, check the part regarding the memory slots and see what exactly is written there. Then check that the memory you bought matches.

Just out of interest, what memory did you have before hand?

Did you visit your BIOS (press the Delete button when you see that beautiful Dell image at the beginning of the boot). What does it say in the RAM bit at the BIOS screen?

Do you get anyerror messages when you try to boot normaly?

    Keep it cool!

also bear in mind that Dell's (and all mega-corporation pc companies) can be a complete bitch to upgrade, and in fact sometimes Dell will set it so the computer will *ONLY* work with Dell hardware - so the motherboard is actually designed to reject third party ram.

According to some info I checked up over at Dell, the system can hold up to 512MB total, in the form of 2 x 256MB sticks of RAM.

What sort of ram did you order? I'm assuming it's DDR-something but it would make a difference if your motherboard only supported up to PC133 for instance and you ordered say PC4200 (just for an extreme example).

I recommend you got to somewhere like memory4all.com and use their thing that finds memory that is garanteed (sp?) to work with your system. There is also an article in a recent Computer Shopper about this very thing, I believe involving a Dell. I will look for it and get back to you.
