Newbie question(SLI)

SLI: Scalable Link Interface.

This is nVidia's technology allowing for two (and theoretically more) video cards grunt to be combined as one. There are some requirements, however:
1.)An SLI cabable motherboard. (nForce 4 SLi)
2.)2 of the same nVidia 6600GT/6800GT/6800Ultra PCIe (PCI Express) video cards (SLI is not an option for AGP cards)
3.)A power supply providing at least 33A on the 12V rail (or combined 12V rails).
4.)Money.

ATi has a similar technology, MVP, that looks to be a lot more flexible, but you'll have to stick with an ATi chipset from the looks of things (Radeon Xpress).
