No IP ON PRINT SERVER - FRUSTRATED NEED HELP

Hi

Can any one help me with this print server. i have 2 pcs both sharing a broadband connection via a netgear wgt624 router. i have set them up so i can use the internet on both and also can access the second hard disc on one machine from both.

My girlfriend uses 1 and i use the other. mine is quite slow to boot and mine is the one my printer is connected to via usb - its a hp deskjet 5110. i thought that to make things slightly easier i would buy a print server.

i didnt want anything flash just something to do the job so i bought a edimax 1205um single usb port unit.

i was under the impression that i could connect this unit directly to my netgear router/switch and then could print via either pc with out the other being on if i needed to

ive connected it and am at a total loss, ive run all of the setup programs but the network just doesnt see the print server. ive gone into the router menu and the item is listed as an attached item, but the print server seems to only offer a mac address and the ip and name spaces are blank. im sure that this is the reason the computers can not see it on the network but i dont know what to do to rectify it.

has anybody else had this problem or does anybody know what i am doing wrong

Im at a total loss, been messing about with it since last night and am totally confused, it seems as if almost my router isnt assigning an ip number to the print server,

i read on another forum that once you install the software that it configures an ip but i cant see that software can find the server if physically there is no ip address to link it into the system.

and i cant configure the thing as i cant link into it to give it an ip number - this must be a common problem it cant just be me. in my router conf under attached devices it only show a mac address for the server but it has assigned ip address to my computers
 
One thing you must understand is that your wireless network and hard-wired network, although they share the same router, are on seperate subnets. This prevents you from being able to "see" the print server from a system using wireless, no matter whether it is connected properly or not.

sorry i havnt explained it properly, even though i have a wireless router, both pc,s and my print server are all hardwired via ethernet 10/100 ports, i had the wireless for my laptop which i have now sold

im sure its to do with this ip problem, but im unsure as to how go about sorting it out, im sure the router should automatically assign the print server with an ip as it has done to the pcs, but it hasnt, if i need to configure the print server to allow itself to be automatically assigned, how can i do this if i can not access it, i have read all of the tech stuff on edimax's website which was useless and i have also been on netgears website which was a bit better but nearly as useless. ive tried netgears tech support on and off all day and just get asked to leave a message, but when the voicemail thing clicks in it says i cant then hangs up. brilliant. im sure theres something really silly havnt done. if set my router to dchp
 
Your print server (or any server for that matter) should not use a DHCP-assigned IP address unless it is statically assigned. In other words, servers should always have unchanging IP addresses. Try connecting directly to the print server at its default IP address and configure it to use an IP on the same subnet as your LAN.

sorry to sound stupid but im a bit of a novice at this how exactly do i do that, im using win xp

Your OS has nothing to do with this really, as all of the configuration will take place in the router and the print server itself. First you have to find out what IP the print server uses by default... do you have the documentation for that print server?

it says 10.0.0.2, ive put that into the browser and nothing, just cant find page

OK, I stand corrected, you will have to change something in Windows. Go to your network settings and change your IP address to 10.0.0.3, then try to connect to the print server again. This time you should be able to connect, change the IP of the print server to something in your own subnet, then finally change XP's IP address back to something in your subnet (or DHCP if you're running it).

nope still wont see it, totally confused, it surely can not be this diffacult
