Noisy starter motor...

Being a 'trained' mechanic, I should know this but I've been out of the game for a while so need some advice!
Just got a Fiat Bravo 1.4 SX (my first car!:D ) and it starts OK but makes a horrible grinding noise just after it starts and the noise goes away after a second or two. Does anyone have any idea what it is? This is my first port of call and you guys are technically-minded so ... !

firstly i would have to say, when you start it are you keeping the ignition key turned for too long, as soon as the car starts release the ignition key, failing that i would think its either the stater moter that is faulty, but one important thing to do is to check out the water pump, if it were me i'd take the car to Halfords and let them listen to it (obviously, assuming you live in the UK)
 
It's definately not keeping the ignition switched on too long because it does it regardless of how long it's switched for. I've been advised that my starter motor isn't disengaging when it should and a rip-out and overhaul/lube job should do it.
And I've had trouble with Halfords before ... but my old college does decent jobs ... it's all spend, spend, spend! Just wish I had a garage to do it myself! lol

sound like it must be the starter motor, try swaping it out (with a motor from a friends car) & see if this fixes it, if it does try to find somewhere that provides a motor rewind service (but i doubt you'll find one)
 
Your starter motor is on it's way out either the starter gear is worn or not lining up correctly, and or the bearing that spins the gear down the shaft to inguage the starter motor gear to the fly wheel is shot
 
The Gear on the starter is grinding on the Flywheel.. Either the flywheel is going Bad,Or the starter gears are wearing out.
 
Probibly the Solonoid not disengaging the gear properly. Older toyotas are notorious for such issues. Its more prominant during the cold months.
Rebuild kits usually do em good. not too hard to do its all nuts and bolts.
 
hi if its a magnetti marrelli it one we used to build in whitch case it your starter in side is a gear box with three kogs and a plastick wheel with teathon the inside once this is worn it makes a noise when you start the car take it of and bin it or open it up and put a little grease in should keep the noise down for a wile hope this helps steve
