Noob question about resolution

Sorry for such a noobish question and this probably isn't even the right forum to post this topic on for which I apologise but any help is much appreciated. My problem is that I normally have my screen resolution set at 1024 by 768 but whenever I load up a game the resolution automatically changes to 640 by 480 even when the game supports higher resolutions, meaning that whatever I set the resolution of the game to it always ends up being 640 by 480. Can anybody tell me why this happens and how to change it.
 
I do change the resolution in the game but because the screen resolution of the monitor has automatically changed to 640 by 480 any resolution higher than that in the game still appears in 640 by 480 because you can't have the resolution of a game higher than that of the monitor, for example if the maximum resolution my monitor was capable of displaying was 640 by 480 it couldn't possibly display a resolution higher than that. The problem is that I can change the resolution for my desktop to anything I want but when I load up a game it automatically changes down to 640 by 480 and I don't know why it does this or how to stop it doing this. which video card do you have? also which game are you trying to play, it maybe that the game does not support the resolution.
 
My video card is a Radion IGP 320M and it happens with more than one game, at the moment I'm having problems with Baldur's Gate 2 and Divine Divinity which both definately do support higher resolutions (specifically I'm trying to use 800 by 600).
 
I don't really know if it's intergrated or what that even means. Thanks for the link but I'm really not sure what I need to download or if that will help. Sorry but I really don't know anything about this sort of stuff, I'm not even sure that it's my video card causing the problem. Thanks for trying to help anyway though.
 
If memory serves, the higher the resolution of monitors, the lower the mazimum refresh rate. Try lowering your monitor refresh to see if that helps.
 
Many games automatically detect the graphic settings, including the resolution for optimal performance.

The card sounds very old, in which case is probably only capable of a low resolution.

It's part of the motherboard chipset instead of being a separate upgradable expansion card.
 
It's alright I think I've got it sorted now. If I set the resolution to one higher than the one I want then I can use 800 by 600. Thanks for all the help though.
