    Hi

Just got a new Gainward 9800GT and SilentForce 550W PSU to power it all with. I have a problem with the system freezing. This is an upgrade an from ATI X1300.

When it freezes the contents of the screen remain displayed, occasionally a few pixels will go white.

The machine will freeze up after a few minutes at most. I managed to get the drivers from the CD on, which keeps the system alive a little longer. If I reboot immediately the machine dies much faster (sometimes doesn't even boot the OS). If I wait a while (a few minutes) and reboot it stays on much longer.

Before I got the drivers on, the fan was going full on and it died consistently quicker than with the drivers installed. Also I have the same problem with it booting into Ubuntu, with the properitaty drivers installed.

This all makes me think its an overheating problem, I can't get anything installed to monitor the GPU temp (as the machine doesn't live long enough), but all the air coming out of the PSU and the GPU fan is cool. Also the case is open.

Or could it be the PSU? PSU is rated at 550W and the box says it needs 450W.

Or could the card be duff?

Thanks for any advice anyone can offer.

    1. Is the PCIE header from the PSU plugged firmly into the card?
    2. How to the 12V+ rails look in the system health screen of the BIOS?
