I need help understanding OEM processors. I purchased on ebay a CPU that stated it was a NEW 2.93 (qx6800) quad core extreme processor -OEM. I just received it and it looks as though the corners are slightly polished as though it had been clamped by something. Also, the middle of the CPU looks to be a square outline on the processor, which looks as though someone scuffed to hide. Also, what should the numbers read on an OEM QX6800 extreme CPU. The ebay user has a mid 3000 standing and 98.2 rating.
OEM= Original Equipment Manufacturer. That means it's just the item itself. The seller probably purchased it as such, used it for a bit and decided to sell it. OEM parts can be purchased new, which is what this seller likely did. To me it sounds like he probably lapped the heatspreader some. This is typically done to improve the contact area between the CPU and heatsink for better thermal transfer. Intel does have a code on the chip, starting with S. Something like "SL443". I'd have to dig around Intel's site, but they do have a database you can compare that code against if you think you didn't get the real deal.
Fake CPu's can actually be made? I think it would be a little obvious that they wouldn't be the real thing one way or another...
Yap, sounds like the user used it for a bit. Either that or intel is getting sloppy with their factory testing. I'm not sure where you got the fake CPU idea from, but no, there isn't a tangable way to fake a CPU... Not that will be functional at least.
