Operation Timed Out?

I get that message in the middle of my screen all the time...usually in the middle of a game....then I have to quit the game...because the page scrolls when I touch anything...what is OTO? :confused: :good:
 
Ummm, sounds like a program which is running in the background and trying to connect to the Internet (could be software which auto-updates, like HP print software). Clean out your startup and remove any unnecessary programs.

but I can't see any programs running where you're suppose to see them down by the start button...on that row at the bottom...unless programs are running and are not displayed...but it's nothing i've got running! Could this be another problem with my modem? or..what do you suggest?

I keep getting weird notices...like right now...i got another notice saying when i went to check messages " this program is not responding would to like to end now..." but it was responding normally so i just hit the x and returned here to add this... :confused:

I think I've got 156MB RAM and a 6.04GB Hard-drive with 70% used...this is what i pulled from " system summary "...

Well, it looks like your bottleneck is two-fold:

* Your RAM is in low quantity; you'll do well with at least 256mb RAM, especially when heavily mutlitasking.

* Your CPU is either a Pentium3 ~500MHz or a P3-based Celeron at the same frequency. Either way, your system isn't exactly a powerhouse. That could account for the slowdowns, especially if you are running memory-resident applications like anti-virus software.

If your "timed out" errors are network related, i.e. a program trying to get online by itself when your dialup connection isn't active, you'll need to narrow it down to which software is trying to get online. Once you've found the culprit(s), you can either change the application settings to cease and desist the irritating behaviour, or simply prevent it from running automatically when Windows starts up.

Confused...I'm not on a network...does software operate independantly and try to get on line without me being aware?And if that's the case how do I change the settings on an application presuming i can even find which one it is? :confused:

when i bought this system i upgraded it to 156 from 64...guy who upgraded it told me if i wanted more i'd have to install more boards...is it even worth it?

There's alot of stuff on this comp i don't use or use very often but i don't want to get rid of it entirely...for example: i've got three browsers IE, netscape and firefox...three media players realplayer, windows mediaplayer, and quicktime...two e-mail things outlook and netscape mail&newsgroups...
I've burned disks ( not bootable ) and have everything on them but i don't know if i can reclaim them from a non-bootable disk? If i can restore the applications when i want them from disk i can delete them from my computer and open up some space...but i don't want to do that unless i'm sure i can get them back!

I was thinking about buying an external unit to transfer the things i don't use very often ( or don't use at all but don't want to get rid of anyways ) would this solve my problem?

a friend of mine also suggested that i might consider just buying another CPU ?
