    Hello

Putting a new setup together. Uses an Intel DP965LT MOBO and I bought an HP dvd 1040 IDE drive.

Now nowhere in the Intel info or Web Site does it say where to connect the audio (analogue and digital on separate outputs) from the drive. There is no header to take the flat (analogue) 4 pin plug that I am used to, from my last build (5 years ago).

I have been told that I should have bought a SATA device as the audio comes down with the data...

It seems the only way out now is to fit a legacy soundcard or spend another £25 and buy another drive.

Or is there a cable to connect to one of the front panel audio headers? There are two: HD Audio Link and AC97. The case has daisy chained connectors for both and I have used the AC97.

It all seems odd as there are plenty of IDE optical drives being sold, so why no MOBO audio header

Sad to say that Intel Support has so far not been helpful... keep coming back that the pages and pages of their form have not been correctly filled in.

thanks if anyone has any ideas

since WinMe was released IDE devices do not require the 4 pin cable to be connected
    IDE does now too
it is on the mobo, i haven't found a decent pic of your mobo, but the connector is probably near the rear audio connections
because their not required, and the reason their still on optical drives is probably because it cheaper to leave the machine setup to add them than it is to modify the machine to not add them

Edit: have you tried looking at the mobo manual ?

Well, thanks very much for that. :D

Now why couldn't Intel simply tell me that... I have looked up both interfaces and not found one that 'talks' about audio coming down the data cable. In fact audio is not mentioned in the Intel data or on the HP site for the drive.

I guess I thought I need a separate cable as I recently put a Sony drive in the old system. That definetly needed the separate audio cable but of course the mobo IDE interface would not have had the protocol to handle it that way. That is one reason the optical drive makers are leaving the additional sockets.

I have been over and over the Intel board and there is definetly no separate 4 pin audio header.

But if its going to pick it up off the IDE interface then all no problem.

Have a good Christmas and New Year
