    Hello,

I have Windows ME and XP SP2 on C:\ and D:\ respectively. I have Sony CD-R/RW drive (model: CRX220E1) as master in the secondary IDE.

The OS (both ME and XP) hangs while booting with CD RW plugged in. It never completes booting. But it works fine when I remove the CD RW.

I will boot XP by removing CD RW and once it completes booting, I will hibernate the system and turn off. Now I plugin CD RW and switch ON the system, resumes windows XP and it will work fine. Once inside XP, it detects the CD RW and will work fine even if I choose re-start the system without removing the CD RW.

This is how I managed to work for a month. But today, the system failed booting as before and I removed the CD RW and hibernated. XP resumes fine on Switch ON with CD RW and detects it. But when I try to access the CD RW, the system hangs and when I re-start it hangs as before while booting.

I replaced my CD RW with some other drive (DVD/ my friend's SONY RW) and everything goes fine without a hitch.

I like to figure out what is causing the problem and what is the solution. Any help from you would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot for your valuable time.

sounds like it was just a bad drive.
