Could anyone please tell me what the difference is between the P4 LGA775 processors and the P4 478 ones? Is there any difference in performance between a P4 LGA775 3.0GHz processor and a P4 478 3.0 GHz one? Is it worth paying the extra for a LGA775? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

With the LGA775 chips, there's only one core: Prescott. For the S478, you have Northwood and Prescott. LGA775 was designed specifically to handle the Prescott core, particularly in combination with the i915/i925X chipsets. Comparing an LGA775 to a S478 CPU with a Prescott core, there's no difference.

Now, if you already have a motherboard, you'll have to purchase the LGA775 or S478 CPU as dictated by the motherboard. These are two entirely different processor packages, and they are incompatible with each other.
