Hey, i just looked a screenshot, and i noticed, this other guy has about the same amount of ram as me, he has less ram left, at the moment i have 408mb left of the 1gb, and he has 379, but he also only has 365mb pagefile usage, then i look at mine, and my page file is 710mb!, why is this, how can i reduce it, no wonder my computer is slowing down, its the page file!.
<Ctrl Panel> <System> <Performance> (i think) or rght clck <My Comp> and select properies, the swapfile / pasefile should be about twice the amount of RAM you have installed, if you set both the min and max to the same amount Win won't waste time and resources resizing the swapfile
I have set them both to 1500, but still, the pagefile is at 584mb, i dont mean its set at 584mb, i mean in task manager thats the amount of pagefile currently been used, and this other guy only had like 200-300 pagefile, so why am i getting this amount of page file when i have more ram free than him?
I have no idea. To be blunt, Windows' memory handling is terrible. It wouldn't swap at all until you totally ran out of RAM if it made any sense at all. If you run Windows, this is something I wouldn't really be too concerned with, as totally disabling the page file will cause all sorts of problems with the OS.
The reason why i am bothered is becasue i asked this guy for a screenshot, my ram usage was less than him, i had more ram available, but at the same time i had over double the amount of pagefile been used compared to him.
well that windows does is swap out memory that isnt being used by your computer and puts it into the swap file and any programs that are being used ar put into the ram for instant access. U might have a lot of applications that arent being used so windows just frees up them memory. try restarting ur computer and loading up a few hundred meg of ur ram and use the programs. like adobe, internet and keep switching to them continuously.
If you're out of ram, it will be swapped to the page file. The size of the page file should be AT LEAST the amount of ram. But if you have enough ram, and are certain that you won't run out of memory, you can lower the page file or disable it.
The default page file is 1.5 times as big as your whole RAM. If your pc has 1 gb or RAM, the page file will be set to 1500 MB. To change that, look here: Microsoft Windows XP - Change the size of the virtual memory paging file
then willz u can see how much windows uses as pagefile. load up about 400mb if u gt 1gig ram and make sure u restart windozzzee. i reckon that it wont use that much page file since it wont really have anything that isnt being used. it only swaps things thatr arent being used often and if they are being used then it wont swap them out if u get wat i mean
right, so if i load a BIG program then exit it, it will decrease the page file? I know how to set the page file, the page file is currently at 1500mb max and min.
then restart. bascially wat im saying is that if u have something loaded and arent using it, it will be transferred to the paging file. so if u restart ur computer and check how much paging file u have, then load a few prgrams and use them, then the paging file shouldnt be used as much
Ok, instead of making a new thread, al just put it in here. Restored windows, running silky smooth now . In a bid to keep fragmentaion down, installed trusty ol diskeeper again, and i have set sceduals, just i notice that when i quit the program it stops defragmenting, i set it to defragment every 24 hours for all partitions except the c drive, and anytime it needs to defragment the c drive, anyway, do i have to keep the program open all the time, or say if i just load windows and then dont bother loading up Diskeeper, will it still defragment, because i dont like the idea of going and opening it up all the time, just seems abit stupid just like LCD Studio.
