I was creating a new partition using Symantec Partition Magic 8.0 and during the process there was a power failure. Now after the Windows Xp boot screen I see a blue screen and my laptop restarts and this goes on. So I booted using my Windows XP CD and tried reinstalling Windows XP over the present installation but setup said I had to format the partition because it was corrupted. Btw, I only had one partition So I deleted that partion and created it again. But when I try to format it in NTFS format I get an error message: Man! A mere power loss can do so much damage??! I lost all my data but I dont want to loose my hard drive too !! Any sorta help would be greatly appreciated.
Run it as a slave on another computer and see if you can format it like that. Many people here will tell you of bad experiances with Partition Magic. Try paragon partition manager.
same as zeus, but i use Acronis partition expert which has being superceeded by Disk Director a few questions: HDD type (IDE, SATA 1 or 2) try C/SEL (cable select) try booting as slave (IDE1)
My "laptops" HDD manufacturer is Toshiba & their site is awful and I couldn't find any such utility. Isn't there a free utility that will work for all hard drives and is also a bootable DOS application? Is there a utility that will recover my data?
Its a bit harder to sort out being a laptop drive. I personally would (have done!) buy an adapter which allows you plug your 2.5" drive into a 3.5" IDE on your motherboard. Its far easier to fix and recover data from drives when they are accessable from another operating system. This is the only way you will be able to recover your data. If you do want to recover your data you will have to stop using the drive! The more you use the drive the more data will be lost. I dont know of a free data recovery program but im sure theres a "demo" somewhere. See if Stellar Phoenix do a demo Toshiba will do tools for your drive but you will probably find that they are for creating partitions and formatting. If you choose not to access the drive as a slave the manufacturuer tools are probably the best bet for clearing the partitions and formatting. What is the model number of your drive, I will try and find the tools for you. Get it from BIOS if you cant read the side of the drive. EDIT: Toshiba dont have ahrddrive tools! I couldnt find them in the past for a drive ive got! I forgot. Luckily ive got Microscope so used that. Like I said your best off accessing it from windows otherwise try a floppy bootable farmatting tool. There are tons of them around, here is the first that came up for me in a google search... Active@ Kill Disk Hard Drive Eraser. Low Level Format.
why don't you get a HDD converter, like this, although, i don't know where from in Bangladesh Edit: sorry just re read zeus's post
