PC Crashes in 3D games

Please help.

I have just built the following PC

Intel E6300 CPU
ASUS P5B Motherboard - latest Bios updated
Connect3D 1950 Pro 512 MB - Latest Drivers installed
2 GB RAM
550W power supply
Three 8cm cooling fans + CPU fan in case -NO overclocking

DirectX 9.0c, no sound card software installed

etc

I have used PASSMARK software to check the PC

Burnin Test and Performance test, everything passes. I ran the 3D performance test at highest resolution, zero failures. works great.

I have monitored the 12v rail of the power supply as this one is the most critical, operating voltages between 12.10 and 11.95 -> i believe within tolerances.

Now the problem -> Once i try to use 3Dmark06 or battlefield 2142 the software runs OK for about 1 - 2 minutes and the the PC crashed, screen goes black, CPU fan accelerates to max speed and the PC just sits there and hangs. Have to turn off PC and restart then it returns back to the normal operational state
CPU whilst game is running is at ~ 60C temperature
Mobo operating around 50C

Can anybody offer any advice as at the moment I haven't a clue what to try next, except buying and swapping the components out one by one
 
Power supply is a UK branded by Ebuyer compter suppliers, gets good reviews on stability.

Log files, i get several dmp files, all refer to the ATIeee.exe, which point me to the graphics card. however all the test i have run on it have passed.
 
Well, you might want to try uninstalling the ATi drivers (and Catalyst Control Center if you've installed that), searching for all ati*.* files and deleting them, rebooting, then downloading and installing the latest drivers again.

You may have gotten a corrupt file. It could be those two programs are the only thing it's got an issue with, so make sure it's those two alone and not something else.
 
Thanks, i have reinstalled windows from the start and only installed the latest video drivers, no Catalyst or sound software installed, only other drivers are the latest LAN driver.

All drivers the latest from ATI web site, problem still happens

What form of CPU cooler are you using ? 68C seems high to me, especially if you are not overclocking. Mobo temp seems high too.

If your CPU cooler is losing contact with the chip (low grade thermal grease) or (slightly uneven cpu surface & low grade thermal grease) then you could be getting temperature drift. Zalman makes some really nice cooling fans. Artic Silver thermal grease is good.

Try opening up one of the open drive bay slots in the front of the computer. You may not be getting the airflow from front to back in your machine. I drill out holes on mine.

If your machine runs well under normal conditions and fails only during games (BF, CS-Source etc.) then it could be power fluctuations. You should have enough power to run your system, however it's worth checking the specs on your power source to verify that you are producting a constant 450watts- plus and not just under stress loads....basically, bigger is better when it comes to Wattage.

Bottom line: Get your system a bit cooler and verify proper wattage.
