    Hi everyone,

I've started having a problem with my work laptop (Dell Latitude E5500 on Windows XP SP3) - every once in a while when I leave it on standby (as I normally do before leaving work), it remains blocked in an unresponsive semi-powered state (power led is on, screen is black) in which I have no choice but to force it off by keeping the power button pressed for 5 seconds. This, of course, is different than the normal Standby mode, when the Power led flashes slowly and you just need to press it once in order to resume Windows.

Sometimes there's even a delay of a minute or so between when I choose the Standby command and when the computer actually goes into Standby. When this happens, it's almost certain that the Standby will be a "frozen" one.

This problem seemed to happen more and more often lately, which is why yesterday I decided to leave the laptop on Hibernate for the next day. Unfortunately, the same problem occurred: after choosing Hibernate, the PC displayed the "Preparing to hibernate" message, and froze there, including the mouse cursor. In contrast with Standby, the screen here doesn't go black, but the only solution is still to forcefully shut down the power.

This problem never occurs when I use the Shut Down command instead of standby/hibernate. I could, of course, just shut it down every time I leave work, but I prefer to use Standby. Can anyone suggest what I might do? Many thanks in advance!

I never use hibernate or standby, they seem to always have problems... What happens if you do not use them ? Just turn off screen savor and where it say stand by mode, put never..
    See what happens then..
