Hi guys Im wanting to hook my new tv to my PC. My problem is my HDMI port is occupied. I have a Radeon 5850 Card with 1 DP, 1 HDMI, and 2 DVI ports. My Monitor has 1 VGA, 1 DVI , and one HDMI. My TV has HDMI only. My monitor is hooked through HDMI. I was going to just get a DP to HDMI adaptor for the TV but I do not know if that combo will carry sound. I need sound to the TV but not the monitor because I use external speakers plugged into my MB for the PC but would like to use the tv speakers when utilizing the TV but if I cant easily thats ok.. I hope you get my problem. How would you configure this??

According to http://www.displayport.org/consumer/?q=content/faq DP to HDMI will not carry sound only DP++ will.

A: DisplayPort does handle full HDMI signaling including sound but keep in mind that implementation of full HDMI signaling is an option the PC manufacturer must choose to enable. It is recommended that you check with the PC manufacturer prior to making a purchase and verify that the PC supports DP++ capability with HDMI. DisplayPort adaptors simply passes through the DVI or HDMI signal.

Why not use HDMI for TV?
