PC won't turn on!

Hi all,

Got a problem with my pc where it won't turn on at all. It was working fine at night, shutdown perfectly with no problem at all, but wouldn't come on in the morning. Have tried a diff PSU but has made no difference at all. One PSU i tried just constantly turned itself on/off/on/off, powering all fans/LED's etc, with a clicking sound each time it turned on.

Any idea what the problem could be from this poor description :O all fans on motherboard work when psu turns on so power is getting across the board, could the mobo still be the problem, or the processor?

Processor : AMD 64 bit 3500+
MOBO : MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum SKT939 nForce4
Graphic card : Abit ATI Radeon 9600XT 256MB

That happens sometimes and there are many things that can cause such behaviour. Check your motherboard to make sure that:
  • Your motherboard is properly mounted to the chassis, and is not grounding anywhere it should not be
  • All jumpers on the motherboard are set properly, and the CMOS Clear jumper is in the "Off" position
  • All IDE drives are connected properly and each have their jumpers set properly (Master on the end of the chain, Slave in the middle)
  • All expansion cards are seated deeply and evenly (especially the video card)
  • If your video card has a 12v power header, make sure it's connected to the PSU
  • Your RAM is good. Use Memtestx86 to verify this. If you cannot boot your system to accomplish this, you will have to test your RAM in another (compatible) system that is functioning
  • Your power supply is functioning and is adequate to power your system

Try these simple steps and let us know if you still need assistance.

thanks for the reply, tried all the above, removed motherboard and re-mounted it, cmos is a button not jumper so thats ok, IDE drives set up correctly (only 2 cd drives anyway). PC won't load at all, not even bios so can't check RAM. removed all cards and replaced them back in, vid card doesn't have a 12v connection.
Any other ideas as it still won't load at all? Will the mobo have a warrenty? Its only 7 months old, yet there was no mention of it at all on case or instruction manual

If you can get your hands on a system which is compatible with your RAM (friends? family?), I'd throw your RAM in there and do an overnight memtest on it. Bad RAM can definately keep a system from booting, same goes for the video card.
 
cheers, will try testing ram in a friends computer then. would the video card also stop it booting then, as i thought it would be able to boot, but you just wouldn't be able to see it on screen?
 
That really depends on the motherboard. I have a few systems that will boot headless, but most won't. A system can also fail to boot if the PSU is insufficient for the initial boot load.
 
cheers for all the help, but the motherboard was the problem, returned it to ebuyer and they have found a fault and today said they will replace it under warrenty. just need to wait for them to get stock of the board now :rolleyes:
