PCI-E vs AGP8x

theres not really much of an advantage (yet) except that stronger cards will soonly abruptly jump to pci-ex16 and leave agp 8x to die, im sure that even the new 7800 line supports pci express only, pci express has broader, and faster potential running simultaneous 8x video cards (via sli) one 16x card, or ati's 16 by 16 (crossfire)
 
So would you advise getting a board with PCI-E 16x and a nice 6600GT PCI-E to go with it so itl last for future advances?
Or wait a bit until there are definite advantages?
 
PCIe is able to replace current PCI and AGP standards in one fell swoop. PCIe isn't a bus topography like PCI and AGP, so there's no sharing of bandwith. There's a set number of lanes from the chipset, each with 500MB/s. A PCIe slot is designated by how many lanes go to it. Right now we've got PCIe x16 and PCIe x1 slots with 16 and 1 lanes to them as standard configurations.

You will need a motherboard supporting PCIe as the cards are not compatible with AGP or regular PCI slots.
 
Another advantage of PCI-E is that they can supply more power to the graphics card, meaning that some cards require only one molex connection, rather than the 2 for the same AGP card.
 
yeah, i am going to have to say goodbye to my old trusty friend soon, well the motherboard, processor and graphics card anyway, i'll keep my current stuff as it'll mean more money up front and i can always upgrade that a lot easier later on...i'll probably get an AMD motherboard and 64 processor...or wait for the intel 64 chips to come out...any ideas when they will be? i'll have to get a new monitor as well, mine wont cope, its good but has a slow response time and i think a new one for new PCI-e cards would be good. I wont get this stuff until i absolutely have to though....
 
were gettin a better friend though!

if the girls dont know eachother then i wud jus check out their circles of friends to make sure thay cant know eachother at all then get with both of them!

haha no they're in my class and talk to each other alot, yeah also

a 6800GT is good for the money too, but its good for the money if you have a bit more money
