PLEASE HELP - Game Graphics Issues

I am in most parts a PC gamer. I have a large collection of games such as FarCry, CoD2, TES : Oblivion, HL2 and many more. However, even though after getting a new system, I still cannot run games like CoD2, FarCry and Oblivion on FULL or at leat high-medium and I do not know why this is so... some one please help!!???

These are my main system Specs:

AMD Athlon 64bit 3000+
1GB RAM
Nvidia GeForce 6600 256mb
 
Just in comparison, I can run FarCry at Medium Graphics and get about 40fps (smooth).

My specs are:

Athlon 64 3000 (Socket 754)
512MB PC3200
Sapphire Radeon 9600XT

I don't know how well your PC should be performing, but it sounds about right.
 
how come i can't run these games on full?? I mean wtf lol, i thought my system was reasonably good, and worthy to run games on at least higg gfx??
 
While Oblivion is going to take more graphical power to run it at a decent resolution, the others should run at 1024x768 on up with medium to high detail settings. I would doubt you'll be able to play Oblivion smoothly with the graphics cranked up past 1024x768 and much of any detail setting enabled. Your system is roughly what mine is, and these are what I've been able to do. If you're wanting 1280x1024 with medium to high graphic quality enabled, it's not going to happen outside of HL2 and FarCry.

A resolution of 1024x768 is what you should be able to run with at least some of the eye candy turned on in FarCry and HL2. FarCry is a few years old, so even a mid-range card like the GeForce 6600 can handle it at a decent resolution and have the eye candy turned on. Half-Life 2 uses the Source engine, and that's extremely flexible on video card architecture. I'd imagine of the ones you want to play, this is the one that you will likely be able to run at the highest resolution and with the most eye candy at that resolution.
I'm not sure about CoD2, but at worst, it's comparable to FEAR, and I can run that at a 1024x768 with medium detail settings. Oblivion is the most taxing game out there right now, even moreso than FEAR or Battlefield 2. It requires a lot of graphical horse power to run, but is just all around a beast on the system.

What resolution are you playing at? The higher the resolution, the less detail settings you'll be able to use without taking a performance hit.

My main rig is comparable to what you have, so I've got a pretty good idea of what you can pull off and what you can't.

Another thing that might be affecting your performance is using old drivers for the card. The latest version can be had over @ nVidia's website.
 
ummm, ok i see... i am actually using old gfx card drivers, i thikn the one before the last 2 nvidia releases...

usually optimal system setting for CoD 2 and Oblivion will ask me to play at a resolution of 800x600:O with high-medium setting on for CoD 2 and Low-medium settings for Oblivion...
 
Oblivion's high settings is aimed at the X1900XT and Geforce 7800 cards, previous generation cards just won't handle it past 1024x768.
 
ok, but what about for CoD2... I have a friend who has a gfx card worse than mine, with less hard disk space and the same RAM and lower processor speed but it lets him run the game on better settings that me, WHY IS THIS lol????????????????????
 
Oblivion is quite the high-end game. Don't expect to run it on high settings with that card. Even with a high-end SLI setup, you can get drops in framerate in some of the more intensive areas such as The Great Forest. If you want a better gaming expirience... At least get a 7600 GT.

It also depends on some other factors..........There are two which I can think of now......
1. Depends how many applications are running on that moment.
2. Your friend might be overclocking his computer.

I see what you mean... how much and wehrre can i get a 7600 gt??

I dont think he is overclocking his comp because i dont think he knows how to... could he be doing it unintentionallly??
 
PNY...err, I wouldn't go with them. I've never seen a good PNY product, so I'd avoid them, especially when you can get other brands that actually understand the term 'quality control'. eVGA has a 7600GT with the same specs as that PNY 7600GT, and includes a rebate here.
PNY has all but disappeared, and this is likely due to their poor QC and the subsequent consumer backlash.

LOL!! Thnx for the notification buddy, I didnt think PNY were all that good...
 
my first agp graphics card was a PNY Geforce FX 5200, and believe it or not i was blown away. It was 256 mb so i was like "OH SHIT!!" I was playing max payne and soldier of fortune 2 with a huge smile on my face.....that was the last time i used pny. XFX and eVGA are the brands i use now, but recently XFX cards i've gotten would overheat. but long story finally short, stay the hell away from PNY...especially RAM!!!
