Hey guys. I would like to OC my cpu. My last cpu was a an amd athlon 2500+. i overclocked that but the pc was not stable. I think it was unstable because i didnt not perform the OC correct. i know you have to do it in steps but im not 100% sure how. my pc seems to perform no better then my last with my new setup and this confues me. I have alot of knowledge of pc hardware and software but there is also i great deal that i dont, so help would be great. thx guys. My specs. Amd Athlon 64 3200+ Asus A8V mobo Ati Radeon X1300 Agp 768 mb pc 3200 ram 40 gig maxtor HDD Soundblaster sound card 24 bit 450 watt PSU If there is anything i can do to this pc to make it perform better ideas would be great. I have stock cooling on the Cpu but i also a house fan on it with the side of the tower off. Thank you very much
you seem to be saying you have killed your Athlon 2500+, but it may not be dead, try underclocking it (to say 2000Mhz) and if it works alter the clock upwards gradually, if it doesn't work its probably dead, but try at 1000Mhz (just for the hell of it) good luck!
Thx donkey but i am not using that cpu anymore that is my old 1. right now i have a new pc with amd athlon 64 3200 that i am tring to overclock.
well you need to play with memory timings, FSB and core voltage of CPU and obviously the mutiplier, any problems, just reset everything back to normal and everything should be ok, generally i think Intel's are best when it comes to oc-ing, good luck, dave (AKA, Donkey) just don't push your CPU too far (10-15% ideally)
Go slow. Bump your HTT (the FSB does not exist on A64's) up 5MHz at a time. Test it with [google]Prime95[/google] to make sure it's stable. Run it for AT LEAST 24 hours straight. If you don't come up with any errors, it's fine. I'd also use [google]Memtest[/google] to check your RAM for errors when overclocking. Run it for at least 3-4 hours, but preferrably 8 or more. You can see if your OC failure is caused by the RAM being unable to cope with those settings so you can adjust your timings and/or voltage to correct it. It's also just handy to have for diagnosis in general.

My bios has something called ai overclocking and in there you can choose to overclock by %. 3% brought me from 2.00 gig to 2.06.
