Poor recording quality

Dear forum,

When recording my voice on my pc, I get acceptable quality. With my recently purchased laptop, quality is very bad and I wonder if and how this can be improved. Here are some specs:

PC:
Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bits
Soundcard: SoundMAX Integrated Digital HD Audio
Recording software: Audicity 1.3.14 Beta
Microphone: Trust MC-1500

Laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad Edge 325)
Windows 7 64-bits
Soundcard: ATI High Definition Audio Device
Recording software: Audicity 1.3.14 Beta
Microphone: Trust MC-1500

I'm considering two possibilities myself: 1. Settings in Audicity 2. Soundcard quality
If the latter is the case, is it possible to change the soundcard in a laptop? I've also read something about an external, USB-connected soundcard. What would be a not to expensive way to make the recording quality acceptable?

Please let me know if you need more information..

Hi,

I found this on another forum about a user having trouble with choppy sound recording and it resolved his problem, maybe it will work for you as well :

"Did you switch off system restore?
control panel/system/system protection (left sidebar)/configure
switch it off on all drives. click apply
Then keep the system protection window open but click on the advanced tab up top of that window.
you'll see a box called performance, click on settings
you'll see visual settings, click on the advance tab up top
change from programs to background services
just so you know, audio streaming is background services.
then you'll see virtual memory beneath, click change
untick the box up top and do what needs to be done to enter the recommend amount of memory."

Thank you very much for your input!
I bought the external soundcard anyway and found it to be a big improvement. I'm not an expert but I think it can be assumed the built-in soundcard is just bad.
