Port forwarding, my gateway, my website and a BIG MISTAKE

Ok, here's the deal.....

I have 'hoasted' a web site on my pc...

(its not really a website, its the HTTP server in TightVNC [That im trying to use to get around content filters at my school])

But, i could never get it to work, beacuse when i tryied to log on from school it wouldnt accept my password...

I Only realised today that that was my gateway asking for a password [it is configured via a built in web server] NOT the TightVNC server on my computer.

So, Filled with big headed thoughts i set up my router to pass all requests for Http://[my gateway address]:80 to http://[my pc [behind the gateway]:80

And now i have a problem.... i cant access the gateway config page beacuse it re-directs me to my own :swear: site!

I have tried ending the TightVNC server on my computer and then trying to get onto the gateway.... but it just tells me the connection was refused [Mozzial Firefox]

I could just reset the router.... but then i would have to re-do EVERYTHING.... and also i dont have the connection detail for our ISP [connection type, user name, password etc] beacuse its in a letter that my dad keeps 'safe' (meddlin parents!!!) and he desnt get back untill saturday!

The gateway in question is a : Linksys Wireless G, ADSL Gateway, 4-Port switch (Modell no. WAG54G)

Does ANYONE have any suggestions that DONT include re-setting my :swear: Gateway?

it does sound like you will have to reset the router, since the it redirects to your home page, when you access it.

I can't think of anything that could help you out.
 
Ok, for future reference.... how do i forward port 80 requests to my computer WITHOUT blocking myself out the the Gatway?

Is this something that Linksys (the manufacturer) should be made aware of? or was i a complete :swear: whit when i was setting it up?
 
I think you're going to need to either run over a VPN, SSH-forwarded or maybe a proxied connection. Besides, any VNC is horrible front-line security, and it's nasty to forward graphical content over a congested connection, like those typically found on campus. Even if you did for some reason feel that VNC would be the way to go, I'd highly recommend allowing connections to your VNC box only over either VPN or SSH for security's sake.

I have to go with the VNC connection beacuse its Java based and i can connect to it on port 80 (open port @ school)

The school liek to block anything they can think of so if i can get ALL of the content in a single 'image' then there gona have alot of fun trying to block it.

+ the school are about to switch to a diffrent content filtering system,

EVERY webpage will be viewed by the companies staff (in russia) before its added to a 'safe list', so im going to have to put a front end on it that makes it look like an education site or something (will find out how2 do this when i have to)
 
For your purposes, it seems like SSL Explorer would be the perfect solution. It provides a secure web interface from which you can connect to your local fileservers, intranet web sites, VNC connections, and it can provide a secure web proxy through which you can surf. It's got a pretty secure design, and can run on either Linux or Windows (can you guess which I recommend? ;)). Best of all, it's free (as in both gratis and libre). I've implemented this software for roaming VPN access to our file & print server where traditional VPN solutions would be impractical. Works very well so far!

Great, i will giev it a try (when i get a chance, i wont be back untill 10 'o clock every night for TWO WEEKS [argh!])

I worked out why my gateway was re-directing me to my own website! Its cos i was a VERY big FOOL!

When i firts got it i didnt have a CLUE about most of the stuff i had to set up, the letter i got from the ISP had an ip addy on in and being a fool i copied it into the network ip (not realising i didnt have to do anything with it, i was foolish ok!)

So, The gateways internet IP and Network IP where identical, so when i typed the ip to access the gateway the request was bounced off the ISP's server and came back to my house (and was then forwarded back to my computer)

As far as i can see, being able to configure my gatway from the internet is a security risk (even with a decent username + password) so i woudl advise anyone who can do this to forward port 80 request from the internet somewhere else (like google :)) or completely block the request (use the gateway to do this)
