    hi,

i have recently purchased a Intel P4 2.66 GHZ. It works very well. But after a month, it becomes very slow.

when ever i even run a song, it takes some time to play that song. Some happen with other softwares. Suppose i open Microsfot word, then it also takes time to process and then open the software.

i want to know that why this happens, is it a hardware problem or what. i am using Windows XP Professional.

plz help me in this regard.

    bye

Have you thought of running norton speed disk or defrag.
Try formatting and then installing everything again bcoz some nasty spyware/virus must be playing with u.

this is what i do as this too happens to me.

Woah! Let's not jump on the reformat/reinstall wagon just yet.
I do not recommend Norton products. They've become bloated over the years, and I've had some of their products fix things that didn't need it and hosed up the os.

First, defrag your drive, the Windows one will suffice. Second, if you don't have an anti-virus, GET ONE! Make sure it's updated before scanning. I use AVG Home Edition, which is free, but there are better ones out there (and Norton isn't one of them, AVG is about the same) like Panda Anti-Virus and TrendMicro's PCCillian, but you do have to purchase them. Speaking of TrendMicro, you can hit up their website for a free virus and security scan.

Secondly, spyware can bog you down. [google]Spybot Search & Destroy[/google] is free and a very good anti-spyware tool.

    That's for the software.

For the hardware part, make sure the CPU is cool enough. A free utility program like [google]Sisoft Sandra[/google] or [google]Everest Home Edition[/google] can tell you what your temperature is reading. If you're hovering around 60*C, then you might need to look at your cooling. First, make sure the fan on the cooler is working. Second, keep your internal wiring out of the way of the airflow. Third, if you haven't in awhile, get some compressed air cans and blow out your case. Dust bunnies can keep the airflow down and raise internal temperatures as a result.

Okay, try those suggestions first and see where that gets you. CPU's generally just don't work half-ass, but the P4's are set to downclock themselves if it gets too hot. If you find that the CPU isn't running at 2.66GHz like it should be (and you know it was running so when you first installed it) then that's a good sign that you've got heat problems as well.

See what that does for you and let us know if it works. If it doesn't, we'll take it from there.
