Hi all, I recently installed Vista (Loving it, packed to the rim with diagnostic features that will make my work life far easier) but it seemed to have gone and corrupted my XP installation on my other HDD even though it wasn't connected (I suspect due to some anti-piracy attempt, Vista writes to the DMI to tell it that Vista is the only OS that should be booted) So I deleted Vista and reinstalled XP on the HDD Vista was on. I backed up all my data from the original XP HDD, and wiped it clean... Full deletion of the partition, and a full format. Now every time I try to boot up Windows it gives me two Windows XP Professional OS's to choose from even though Windows no longer exists on one of the HDD's. So it would seem the DMI reckons there's still two copies of XP on my PC even though I got rid of one completely. This is extremely annoying because every time I boot up I have to use my PS/2 keyboard to select the second option (which is the HDD with XP actually installed on it) because my USB keyboard doesn't work outside of Windows. No matter how I set the boot order, the options still come up. I'll admit, I can't be bothered to reset the CMOS so came on here first to see if anyone knows how to get rid of the ghost XP on startup. I've formatted the drive about 5 times now, all full formats, I've made sure there are no seperate partitions on it, basically there's just no possible way for it to have a single trace of XP left on it. Any ideas guys? Thanks in advance, Mike
Genius that I am, edited the boot.ini and it detected an invalid OS installation so erased it. Sorry for wasting your time guys! Mike
I said that because I solved the problem myself straight after posting. The apology is for all the people who read right the way through the first post only to see that I'd solved it already in the next post...
I've done that before, only to figure it out shortly thereafter, usually with a 'duh!' moment. There's just something about getting the frustration out that makes you think clearer it seems.
