Well I have two questions for you based on your questions that [if answered first] would help me help you. :-P

How are you trying to connect to the internet? -Through broadband or through dialup?

Have you checked the tracks you are trying to play to see if they are actually the full file? I have tried to backup my files before only to find that they backed up as 0 bytes. So please check the actual file on your hdd and see if it looks like a full file (ie: 4.3mb or whatever).

If you are using Amarok, what engine are you using (have a look under settings)?

sorry, you'll find it a damn sight (lot) easier to connect to net with a router (cos it just works (is difficult to stop it working accidentally) there not that expensive, as for that modem, i'll have a look around

I use a dsl modem and I have programed it to connect automatically. This is the easiest way to connect. On the bottom of my modem there is an IP address to log into for 'advanced configuration'. Point your browser to that, is it exists, and that will store your username and password and autoconnect everytime you power on. Not the best solution but it is totally automatic and requires no configuration after that.

If Amarok is skipping tracks, it's because you don't have the correct codecs set up. Look in the 'Getting the most from Kubuntu' thread and click on the 'setting up multimedia codecs' link.

Alternatively, download EasyUbuntu which can automatically set up everything for you

For future information, if you're having problems playing mp3s in Amarok, you need to:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install libxine-extracodecs
You'll need to install your modem first to get broadband, wired ethenet is the easiest to set up though.
