Problems with Avg anti-virus getting on the internet

I have a DSL connection and I recently made the switch to the Avg anti-virus which I have been very happy with on my other computer. When I prompt Avg to update my computer is not allowing access to the internet. I followed the prompts and changed the settings in my firewall to allow avg online and still no luck. Any help or suggestions will be appreciated.
 
You should be safe to disable it for a few minutes!
If you do disable it and get AVG to access the net, it's a setting problem with your firewall.
What firewall do you run?

I tried turning off the firewall and I was still unable to get avg online. I am running the windows firewall that came with the original bundle when I bought the computer.

I am using the free edition because I am a cheap b*****d. I have had the free edition for a year now on my other computer and have been very happy with it. No problems at all like I was having with Norton.
 
Try downloading [google]Zonealarm[/google] firewall. Theres a free edition which is easy configure and install. Then you should have better control which programs access the internet.

I have downloaded zonealarm and I still can not get avg online. Do you have any other ideas?

Sounds like a firewall is blocking AVG from accessing the net. Check your windows firewall, add the program to the allow list or just disable it completely.
 
i remeber that i had a problem getting avg to update sometimes from the web

i have now started to use AVAST - which is 100 times better and free and is more thorough in picking up virus and the like

In my opinion, Avast is the best free antivirus program around. It can detect far more viruses then AVG can. Not only that, but you have added protection for P2P programs, Instant Messaging, Web Shield, Network Shield and Email protection. I believe you only get standard on-access protection in AVG - not nearly enough.

I can't believe Avast is free, it can give most 'paid for' antivirus a ride for their money as well. A good example is with the recent Windows Meta-File image threat. Out of all the antivirus programs tested (almost all available at present), only 4 or 5 gave total protection. Avast was first place out of the free antivirus software, it only missed one threat out of a total of 100, where as AVG missed 59 threats out of 100!

Hey I have a problem like this; it fits in this thread. I can't update my Trend Micro PC-Cillin 2002 anti-virus. I got it as bundle software w/ something somewhere sometime in the past (I'm guessing in the year 2002 lol) ... So at first it worked perfectly fine and I updated it every once in a while. U simply click update and it downloads and installs latest definitions. Er, it did. But then it just randomly stopped working some day. I thought maybe it has a time-limit license attached to it so u can't update anymore unless u pay after a certain time? But if that's the case, wouldn't it tell me that? All it does is say "failed to connect to server." So that sounds like an actual problem with something, not license expiration. I remember having Norton one time for a bit, and it would have all these reminders about how the time period for updating will expire and offering me to buy an extension or w/e. But I don't remember anything like that for this program so I was under the impression that it would let me update free indefinitely. So why would it stop working like that? Or do u guys think there really was a time limit on updates?

what the hell, I just tried it now again just for kicks and it doesn't do anything at all. I click the update button and it just sits there. It doesn't even initiate the connection or do anything whatsoever. like nothing happened ...

Could simply reinstalling it make it work perhaps?
