Problems with heat sink

Hi and sorry for such a basic question. I'm running an Athlon 64 X2 3600+ and am in need of a new heat sink. Opened up my case to check my socket type and it said 'Socket AM2'. Off I go and buy a heat sink which says it's compatiable and it's not. Here is the offending heat sink - The Thermaltake Silent 939 K8

RadioShack.com - Computers: Components & parts: Cooling systems: Thermaltake Silent 939 K8 Solution with Heatpipe Technology

On the packet for the heat sink it says: 'Application for AMD Athlon 64 X2, Athlon 64 FX, Athlon 64, Sempron (Socket AM2/939/754)'.

I'm only just getting into computing and adding / removing things but I though I understood this. Where did I go wrong? The package for the heat sink says it's fine for my CPU. Can someone tell me where I went wrong and how to avoide this in future.

Thanks for all the help ;)

Sorry to break it to you, but thats the wrong fan for you type of socket. I couldn't find the 'AM2' listed below the specs for that fan. All it supports, according to the page and other sources, are:

AMD Athlon 64 (Socket 754 / 939)
AMD Athlon 64 FX (Socket 939 / 940)
AMD Sempron Socket (754)
AMD Opteron (Socket 940)
