Sounds fishy... unable to shut down? Mouse & network flakey? Perhaps it would be good to try a different installation media / ROM and see if you get better results?

well, i decided to give kubuntu another go, will try reburning the install DVD-RW, but to eliminate a possible .ISO problem, should i redownload the .ISO ?

Was your previous ISO corrupt? If it doesn't work download the ISO again but I would recommend the CD install and not the DVD. That is my preference because all that software on the DVD gets out of date very fast and there is a ton of stuff on the DVD you will never use. Better to get the basics installed and then install software over the net and get the most up-to date version. I figure that is better than wasting bandwidth for stuff you won't use and its faster. Just my crazy method.

Good luck! You will spend some time making it pretty because the default kubuntu is god-awfull ugly. I have never seen kde brought to such lows.

I'll have a beer to celebrate your conquest.

when kubuntu first boot - not a good GUI
after a bit of tweaking - not bad

but i care more about whats going on in the background, it working is more important, but tweaking GUI makes it easier on the eye

Looks more like you're tweaking the wallpaper than the GUI... ;-)
