I've been having trouble with my system for some time now. I've checked everything i've been told to and am pretty sure i've narrowed it down to my motherboard.

Please excuse my lack of knowledge on the subject area.

I'm using the GIGABYTE GA-M59SLI-S5 AM2 NVIDIA nForce 590 SLI MCP ATX.

The problem is sort of a winding, wheezing type noise. It comes and goes but elevates based on whatever I am doing. For example, if I were to scroll down this page the noise elevates.

I've been able to live with it for a few months but today I
was capturing some audio from a vinyl record and it captured the noise with the track. So now I have a track that has this same wheezing noise in the background. It's been bearable until now but this seems like a roadblock. Is there something I can do to test the motherboard and verify that it is coming from there?

I have checked every fan, the processor, power supply etc. and I know for sure it is not any of those things.

    Any ideas would be appreciated.

    Hii mate,

Just a few things for you to check/try. Firstly has you motherboard got an chipset fan (little fan that sits directly onto the motherboard) because to me it sounds like the bearings in one of the cooling fans. Another thing u could try is when the noise is happening stop the fans with your finger just for a second and see in the noise stops but dont do this for too long because it will overheat. if you cant find it being one of your fans try disconnecting you BIOS speaker or disabling it in the menu when u boot up. Also check for any wires that could fall onto the fan blades.

    Thanks for the reply,

Here is a link on Newegg to the board I am using.

Newegg.com - Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, Digital Cameras and more!

Stopping my fan didn't seem to solve the problem. I also tried to disable the audio and that unfortunately had no effect.

Is there a possibility that a capacitor or something like that could be damaged and emitting this noise? I haven't seen any signs of that yet. I've never heard of anything like that but I wonder if it would be possible. I can't imagine what else it would be.

Similar to what I mentioned earlier, If I put on my noise canceling headphones I can't hear the noise anymore. If I hit the switch on the headphones that turns them on and is supposed to keep out the noise better, then I can hear the high pitched noise again. It's not my sound card because the noise has been there ever since I put the computer together in July. I put in my sound card maybe three months ago. I'm not sure if this helps but it seemed odd to me.

Dave you have no idea how awesome you are.

I've been messing with that for the longest time and I never thought it would be something with my hard drive. It all makes sense now. I guess i'm not as good at pinpointing sounds as I thought I was. Although I do feel a bit on the stupid side now that it was something so simple. Problem located, thanks.

In case anyone is wondering what the noise sounds like.
