I have recently built a new system with the following components:

    evga 750i FTW mobo
    quad core q9400 2.67
    4gigs OCZ Reaper SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
    evga 9800 gx2
    Antec NeoPower 650W

When I first set everything up I started randomly getting system freezes with any game or video playback. The freezes sometimes occurred often( every 10 minutes ) but for the most part it will lock every couple of hours or so requiring a manual shutdown.

My initial thought was the graphics card so I exchanged it for a Zotac 260 amp2. The freezes still occur so my next thought would be the motherboard. EVGA suggested that it sounds like a Power supply issue or potentially my memory setup so I manually set the latency and voltage for my memory its recommended settings with no change.

the 260 says it requires 500watts and 36 amps. My power supply has the watts and it has 3 rails for 12 volt at 19 amps each. Is there some reason that the card might not be getting what it wants with this PSU? I also had a spare psu which I tried as well. It was similar in power but just another brand and this didn't change anything. I have also discussed this with zotac and they didn't feel the psu was the problem

I have already reinstalled the drivers with the most recent multiple times unless there is something obscure that I've missed and don't know about.

I ran memtest86 last night for 9 hours which was 5 passes and received no errors. I'm in the process of running prime95 while I'm at work.

My temps all look normal and where the cpu was at 55c during the stress test and the gpu was similar during a game.

if prime95 comes back ok what should I do to track this down? I've heard that memtest86 doesn't catch everything and most feel my problem would be related to bad memory or a bad combo with my mobo. My biggest problem is how often the crash occurs. It can go a couple of days without any problems so it is hard to determine if a fix has worked or helped.

    Any help is appreciated!
    Thanks

The power supply unit in today's modern computer assumes a role probably more critical than any other single component in your system.

A poor PSU can also cause other components to fail in your computer.

The right Brand names = Quality
    Some approved Brand names follow...

    Seasonic - any model
    Corsair - any model
    Thermaltake - "Toughpower" series only
Coolermaster - "Real Power Pro" series only
PC Power & Cooling - any model
    Silverstone - any model

Unless you are not into some serious gaming a 650 watt or higher will take care of your needs...PCI-E requires 26 amps at 12 volts. That's a 650W...Quality...PSU.

If you are a serious gamer a 750 Watt, or a little higher will be all that you would need.

I was suspecting the power supply at first myself, though this is the second one I have tried and there was no change between the two. Is there a way to test this out short of buying a better one? My card says it requires only 500 watts and when describing my power setup to zotac they quickly ruled that out.

If you have tried with a second PSU that is not a Quality unit...Then I don't know what that accomplishes.
