Rattling from HSF

Hey all,

I fitted the Thermaltake Blue Orb II to the PC in my specs today, and it ran really quiet compared to the old stock HSF. I then stood the case up, and noticed a rattle eminating from the case.

I opened it up, and located it to be the HSF. I pressed the fan lightly with my finger, and the noise stopped. I then shut down and took hold of the fan between my thumb and fore finger, and gently pulled and pushed it back and forth. Surely enough, it made the same sound.

Does anyone know a way of stopping the sound? Short of laying the PC down instead of having it stood up? Although it is quite quiet, it's still annoying, y'know that kind of noise? :P

I really want it sorting because putting the new fan on my CPU today has taken the life of one of the sticks of my RAM Kit :( Which I now have to return and replace. God knows when that'll happen...Bloody GCSEs...Hence I'm on the edge slightly lol. :x:

EDIT: being thinking which part of the HSF is rattling cos you could fix it by using some thermal paste or by spraying WD 40 from the underside into the centre of fan

It's the fan physically moving back and forward by about 3mm as the blades go around. This is apparent due to having the PC laid down "Desktop PC" style as opposed to Tower form, and the noise stopped completely.

Is the whole fan moving or are the blades rattling as they spin? If its the former then try using a screwdriver to fix it better to the heatsink.

It is the whole fan, so I will try the screwdriver. I won't do it tonight though as I am a bit edgy now, seeing as installing it took out half my RAM :(

(I'm a 16 year old doin GCSEs - So a RAM failure isn't what I needed lol)

Heh I destroyed a stick of RAM a few weeks ago because of static. Its a right b*stard when you have a fleece jacket on. Same here doing GCSEs next week.
 
Yeah, it's a bitch - I'm guessing I knocked it when putting on the new HSF though. I went back to Novatech today only to find out they were out of stock! :( They did order a kit there and then though, which was nice of them.

Just to sit and wait now.

I've just gone to tighten the screws, but they're as tight as they will go :( so I dunno what I'm gonna do now :(
 
Eh, you may simply have gotten a faulty unit. It happens, not often, but it does happen.
 
Aw, crapfuck. I've given up on it for now as I have had to since it won't be in use. I had left my PC with my colleague for a few days to test the board and see what the problem was with the RAM. Turns out that faulty RAM has taken out one of the slots on the Board! :( I'm going to return the board on tuesday, and when they come back after testing it, if it is faulty (99% sure of this) I will probably buy another Board. I'm going to stick to Asus, but I don't know whether to wait for their revised conroe supporting P5WD2-E or their P5B series, or just to get another 9*5 board. Anyone have any news on when we may see conroe revised 975 boards?

Not for awhile as it may involve a little redesign of the PCB to accoumodate the latest VRM 11 standard. Intel's latest 975XBX board features the necessary updates, but I don't remember the specific board revision to look for.

Rest assured, when they start hitting, you'll hear it.
 
Solved the Rattle - It was because my PC was on a forward lean about 10 degrees tilt, it caused the HSF to go off balance and the fan to hit the blades...
