You can tell from my handle how old I am, so please be kind ;) I have a compaq s5500UK desktop, but I do not know if it has a wireless card as I would like to go down this route at home. How do I tell?

at a guess, i'd probably say you haven't got wireless, unless your manual says otherwise, do you have a broadband connection (that you want to share with more than 1 computer) to the internet or are you just wanting to link 2 or more computer with a wireless connection

Welcome to the forums :).

You can see what devices you have installed by going to the device manager. Access it by right clicking my computer>properties>hardware tab>device manager.

But the easiest way is to just look at the back of your PC and see if theres an antenna sticking out from an expansion card (usually near bottom of the case). They're usually adjustable so you can fine tune the signal etc by rotating.

If you can't find it then you don't have on, and to use wireless you'll need a wireless card as well as a wireless router or access point depending on what you have already.

Thanks for these replies. I have a broadband connection on my PC - and no antenna so no wireless card - and want to link a PC for my son in his room so we can both work at the same time on the internet. I assume that I need a wireless card for his PC as well? Do I have to get one fitted to each or is it possible to do this via usb which sounds easier?
