    Hi

S.M.A.R.T on my pc keeps on telling me my Hitachi HDT722525DLA380 is about to fail!! I run programs like DriveSitter and they tell me the attribute Reallocated Sectors Count's status is BAD. I read on the internet that it's bad sectors which my hard drive hides?

Is my drive broken or is does it need a format?

Thats a bad error unfortunatly. You need a new drive.

When you have an error on a sector it is marked bad and a "spare" sector is used in place of the broken one. When you run out of spares you get the Reallocated Sectors Count smart error. I think this is why drives with bad sectors are a bit slower than normal. The heads are jumping to a throw from the reallocated sectors. You normally have between 100 and 200 spare sectors so the drive must be old or throwing out bad sectors quite a lot.

You might get away with using the drive for a while but you risk data being corrupted. The next time you develope a bad sector it will simply have to be used as a so called good sector, hence the corrupt data.
Just back it up asap and bin it!

Then back it up and contact Hitachi. You must have a dodgy one.

Did you get it in a prebuilt PC or did you buy the components and build it yourself?

If you bought a prebuilt one contact the manufacturuer. The warranty should be more than 7 months. Even if it isnt im sure hitachis warranty will be.

I built my pc myself, but I'm going to format it and check what happens. Otherwise I'll have to do the warranty thing

Type your serial number in here and it will say how long is left on the warranty. They will probably just replace it.

Honestly mate, format wont do a thing. Try the hitachi tools, it might give yo more info.

    Hi

My country isn't there on that website.

My hard drive is still working! It's reallocated sector count sits on 1, yet I haven't experienced any problems with drive physically! Could S.M.A.R.T be broken? It also says the drive should've failed on 25 August 06! I've filled the drive up with data, and no errors! Shouldn't it have shown signs that it's broken or is it going to go off like a time bomb?
