I'm looking for some good software that lets me convert video files to DVD files ready for burning to a DVD. I did try some software not so long ago. I forget what it was called, but it kept crashing approximately half way into the conversion (I think it also burned the files direct to DVD in DVD format), which also corrupted the DVD I was burning to. Any help would be appreciated. Cheers in advance!
I use the VSO ConvertXtoDVD. It doesnt let you create the prettiest menus in the world but its quick (approx x1.45 on my pc) and reliable. Nero has some really good menu options though I find the program unreliable. You can spend an hour getting the menu looking great, click next and its forgotten your menu configuration. I gave up on it after a few attempts.... hence the cheap VSO program!
Most serious tools are not free and can cost quite a bit (circa $30-$40) So do conversions suites such as TMPGenc. I have trialled several and found that for a simple, straight forward, no bells and no whistles, quick conversions and no menus - WinAVI. Does 2h movie in about 45min. If the AVI file is in good quality the DVD will be reasonably good. If you want more control you either pay with time, as you will need a number of tools and processes, or you pay with money. I found the TMPGEnc suite very good for menus and other stuff like joining clips together and overall quality. However, it 'encodes' at more or less x1 speed, more often than not, even less. So encoding an hour of film can take two hours, maybe more. But the quality will be better especially if choosing higher quality settings.
