I have got hold of a cheap Laptop running XP. I wish to remove the Windows XP and install Windows 98se. This is because I have some software that I need to access .....that XP just will not accept even after using program compatability program........... Have tried a million and one ways and It just wont work

So how do I go about formatting the HDD to install 98se..

As trying to format the HDD with XP don't work

MY computer- right click- HDD format

Just put your 98 disc in and choose to format before installation

you will need a boot disk with "fdisk" on it, as well as basic knowledge of DOS commands.

    www.bootdisk.com

you will need to boot up with a floppy disk and teh appropriate boot disk, format the drive, create a logical partition, then restart with the 98 cd.

OK, I just addressed this very issue the other day. You cannot use a 98 boot disk to erase XP. Please look here.

Also, if your hard drive is >= 64GB, you'll need to check this out.

    Thanks,
