A friend of mine asked me for help with his problem, he has 100% CPU usage. with nothing visible running except task manager. Yeah yeah, those seem to be so common today. By looking at a screenshot of his task manager processes I saw nothing in particular. The CPU values listed next to the processes do not add up to 100%.

I suggested he ran rkill to see if the usage would go down afterwards. So far waiting on his reply.

I was wondering if there is any way to see all processes and how much CPU they are using.

He is on Vista. =( and this started a few days ago, could it be a rogue process? a virus?

How would you go about investigating? What would you do?
    Please Help

well it would be nice if we could have a hijackthis log? or even a screeenshot of his process list?

    Its guess work otherwise...

It could be a rogue virus, but they tend not to hide processes - they just run under the same name as a common process e.g. svchost.exe... Or it could be the fact that windows vista hogs most of your cpu power just running the os!
