Well, I had another go at installing Mandriva 2006 today - The first install I did a while back did not work at all satisfactorily.

This time everything seems fine. My optical drives play both video and sound and my printer prints! Of course, I still can't get my SpeedTouch 330 to work (that’s an old story).

I think I will realistically have to give up the idea of getting it to work, as I have tried so many times using a variety of methods.

I plan to buy a router (as I understand they are far easier to setup in Linux, as they don't need a driver). Can anyone please recommend a suitable router that they think would work well in Mandriva, with the minimal amount of configuration? I'm thinking of spending up to £30.00.

    Many thanks,

    Dave.

    P.S.

Would I also have to buy additional telephone line filters for the new router? I'm guessing I can't use the existing ones that came with the SpeedTouch...

I am really surprised my method did not work..... Oh well, I suppose not everyone can be perfect..... ;) *retching and caughing*

You can use the exact same microfilters. your J11 cable will now go from the filter straight to the modem/router (assuming it is a modem/router combo).

Check out Big-Pockets, they look like good value for money!

there are so many routers that will work with your ISP (virgin.net if i remember correctly) but remember, you also need a network card (about £10) and a crossover CAT5 cable

just make sure you get a router with a built in firewall, all routers are easy to setup (but, i know how to set one up)
yes you can use the filters that came with your 330, yes they are much easier to setup cos there are no drivers, it just works, if you want to use VoIP you'll need a router with a built in gateway

you'll also need to contact Virgin for the Manual settings & Primary and Secondary DNS (domain name server) i'm with virgin too and (if i remember correctly) manual settings are:
    VPI - 38
    VCI - 0
    username: <username>@adsl.virgin.net
    password: <password>
    Primary DNS: 194.168.4.100
    Secondary DNS 194.168.8.100
    Autentication: CHAP
    MTU: 1458

i think pretty much any of these router will be fine (but i havn't checked them all, just post the one your getting and we'll have a look at it for you)

P.S. you can use your 330 while you are setting up your router, so you can still you your broadband to access HWF to help with your router setup, just connect the phone lin to whichever device you want to use

yeah that router looks ok, and its got a 2 year warrenty, like mine, sorry about the crossover cable thing, the router will come with a CAT 5 cable, it was me that needs crossover cables instead of patch cables (router, VoIP adaptor & switch)

    Many thanks, guys.

I have an ethernet LAN card already installed. I take it this is all I need along with a suitable router? I will check out some of the options kindly provided and post a couple of them on here for your comments as to suitability.

[Dave, yes, I am on virgin.net and those details look familiar. If that's all I will have to enter once I get the router - then I think even I can handle that!]

your best way to configure a router for you is probably to get it working on XP (easly configurable via web confiurator, and your probably more comfortable with XP) then install Mandriva, alter a few settings and whew whew its working
:simpson: time for a drink, to celebrate
