I have a new Samsung 500GB hard drive which used to work fine and suddenly decided to die, i have tried it in several machines with windows xp and vista, this is what it does:

on all machines tested, when searching for hard drives on turning on the machine it takes about 2 minutes and doesnt even find it

on some machines the operating system wont load, sometimes it crashes while loading, sometimes it doesnt even get to the loading stage.

on other machines the operating system will load after a while but still no sign of the hard drive.

i have also tried 3 other cables which work for other hard drives.

the disk model is HD501LJ and S-ATA

    hope someone can help me

    thanks :)

Unfortunately it does sound like the hard drive is dead. If under warranty try contacting Samsung for a replacement.

:agree: but it's worth trying different power & SATA cables in the different systems, if you still have no joy i would be inclined to agree, it's probably gone to the big computer shop in the sky

    Edit:
those cables are probably ok then, but try 2 or 3 new cables
