sangs after boot up

I was given an old computer for to store notes and doc's on it is loaded with 98. When I boot it i can get as far as the desk top, but then the start button(bottom left) comes on for 2 seconds and go's and no icons show. I have done all starts i can think of Safe mode 1-5, cd98 all of them. When i go Ctrl/Alt/Del i can not see any programs showing in the box so i can not even remove anything which may not be responding. can anyone help.

Just right click on the desktop and make sure that "Show desktop icons" checked.

Start button - you mean you cant see start button. Try taking your cursor down at the bottom and see if it comes up......If thats the reason then right click on your taskbar -> properties -> uncheck the autohide task bar~!

Thank you for that but sorry to say I have already done that. No icons show and also when i have gone to the bottom ie start it is not there.
