Hi everyone, I am sure that there is a lot of you out there who will find my particular prob so embarrassingly simple - i hope so 'cos its doing my head in! Every time I try & defrag it comes up with the message that there are errors and I must scandisk but 'scandisk' never finishes as it constantly restarts due to 'drive contents changed'. I have closed down all other programmes + screen saver leaving only explorer and systray, I have windows ME. Your help will be very much appreciated. Thanks Batehoven.
Disable the screensaver and run scan disk. Leave the computer alone, come back in a couple of hours. Do a thorough scan as well, not just the basic.
Just for your benefit I feel it's worth telling you that MS Scandisk doesn't actually fix corrupted files. It simply deletes the file, therefore solving one problem and causing others.
Hello again, Sorry I haven't been back before now - problems at home! Anyway, thanks for taking time out to reply but I am still having the same problem. I have shut down all programmes except explorer & systray using 'control-alt-delete' and have also disabled the screensaver. But scandisk will not complete as the drive contents keep changing so I know there is another programme in the background but I just don't know how to find it?? I tried leaving it for about 4 hours but still would't have it. How do you set scandisk to run before start up?? If scandisk simply deletes a corrupted file what use is it then? I only want to use it 'cos defrag tells me I have to before defragging can finish. I think this is a conspiracy between the both of them!!! Who has Bill Gs number?? regards Batehoven
I've not used ME, I would suggest upgrading to XP if ou can. are you using scan disk in windows or dos?
You've got one of the worst, if not the worst, Windows version. Basically, you're off on the wrong foot to begin with. Get to a different OS entirely. Win 2k or WinXP would be a solid move because they're not based on the Win9x code. If that's not possible, I'd do a clean install of ME to buy some more time, but ultimately, move to something else.
Hello everyone, Many thanks for your advice. I will stick at it & let you know how I get on. Kind regards Batehoven
