I am upgrading my old CPU & MB to a new system that comes with a 320gb SATA-II drive. Now I have an old 80gb IDE (the wide ribbom wires that connect Floppies as well) .

I do not want to re-install windows and all of my programs on the new system as I have tons of business files/passwords/programs all over the old 80gb drive.

So. I want to copy my old 80gb drive sector by sector including boot sectors so my new system will boot off of the new Sata-II drive with ALL of my old information. (then I can toss the 80gb which has made it a few upgrades already and is pushing 8 years old).

    Thanks alot guys.

    Sorry a bit confused :)

So you have a new CPU, motherboard and hard drive (sata), not ONLY a new hard drive?

If you have a new motherboard, you will have to reinstall windows.

If its a new hard drive only, you will have to clone it using imaging software and the restore to the new SATA hard drive, you should now be able to boot from the new HD.

free software for cloning hard drives

    DriveImage XML Backup Software
Miray Software - hard disk copy, hard disk backup, hard disk rescue

I actually did this about 4 years ago and i was able to get it smooth after a few hours of updating new hardware/drivers and alot of reboots...w as going to try it again, but now have SATA-II drive instead of my now really old IDE 80gb....

Will I be able to use my copy of Windows VIsta Upgrade? I dont' want to buy another copy of windows.
