is there some device that when inserted, connected or whatever allows the computer to boot, but not without it? Could really come in handy.

Sort of like a USB drive that contained a certain file or something that signaled the PC it was safe to boot? Something like that, anyone know of anything?

Well, you may have an option in BIOS that prevents the system from booting into any OS without a password being provided. Along with that you'd likely have the ability to set a password that would have to be entered to get into BIOS itself. As far as any specific advice, I don't know of any. Anti-Trend might have a heads up on that one, but he's in the middle of a move, so you'd have to wait a little bit for an answer.
