Serious problem; motherboard?

I am building a PC for a friend out of mostly my parts. Basically, I had Windows XP home installed, and all the nessarry drivers. All was good. Then I restarted the computer and found that the mouse was not responding. No problem, right? Just unplug it and put it back in. Nope. I unpluged it and the PC restarted. No display, nothing, just fans running/hard drive spinning up. Then after about 10 seconds, it turns off by itself. Then I wait a bit, confused, then turn it back on. No display, just fans turning/hard drive spinning up, then it turns off by itself again. It is in the same state right now. Another thing I noticed is the hard drive and power leds on the case no longer light up at all (the connectors are plugged in correctly and where working before).

What I've tried:

-Reset CMOS many times
-Unplugged all drives (CD/DVD/HDs...)
-Reinstalled CPU and memory
-Tried a different working video card
-Tried a different working RAM stick
-Took the A-XP 3200 and put it in different system and it powered up perfectly.

Biostar M7NCD
Athlon XP 3200
Ultra 512MB PC3200
FX 5200 128MB
Ultra X-Connect 500W PSU


Did this motherboard just decide to die or what? :(
 
Why dont you try powering the MOBO outside of the case, just to rule out grounding problems. This just happened to me like a week ago with the same symptoms: everything was spinning but that's as far as it went. :rolleyes:
 
I tried powering the motherboard out of the case, but there was no change. I reinstalled it in the case, still the same. Something I forgot to mention is after it powers off by itself, I am required to turn off the surge protector or it won't turn on. Also the chipset gets extremely hot just from being on for 10 seconds. Too hot to put my finger on it for more than a second. :sick:
 
then it's most likely a motherboard problem. I would say your chipset is fried, maybe along with other pieces of hardware. Most likely CPU and maybe other things connected to the motherboard :( test everything if you can in a working system :(
 
Time to buy another mobo, considering I've tested every part. :sad: At least my Athlon 3200 is not fried. :rolleyes:
 
If you definitely know its your mobo change it. Get something from the MSI or Abit range. The NF-7 rev2 or K7N2 Delta ILSR
