Sorry, I can't help then. I haven't used dial up in 11 years now. However, I can say that dial up in much trickier to set up then broadband, and whether you will be able to do it at all depends on who provides your dial up. For example, AOL I have heard is near impossible to set up.

If you check out this site: http://www.linuxrsp.ru/win-lin-soft/table-eng.html#5, some of the programs listed under Networking, may help. There is a dialup subsection.

I know this thread is a little old, but the problem here is likely the modem. Unless you have a hardware modem (either internal or external), you will have a hard time getting it to work in Linux. Most modems today are softmodems, also called 'Winmodems', which are actually sound cards and not modems at all. All of the modulation/demodulation that would normally take place in the modem's chipset is instead accomplished in your CPU with the use of special software. In other words, it's a fake modem epidemic. Either get a good internal hardware modem, for instance one with a Rockwell chipset, or any external modem with a serial interface. USB modems can be hit or miss, because some USB modems are also softmodems.

...or you could just wait for broadband. :p
