Check the event manager for system and application errors:

control panel > performance and maintenance > administrative tools > event viewer

I don't mind looking through some of the error messages. Simply right click 'System' and 'Application' on the left hand side and choose 'Save Log File As'. Save the log file as a .evt and attach it to your post

Well yeah. There's not any information that identifies your computer

You are only allowed to attach certain file types to your post. You will have to create a .zip archive and put the log file in it.

Well your Event Log is very revealing. Where to start?

    1) Okay, firstly it is very likely you have a virus on your computer. Your computer is making continuous outbound connections to any random IP address, most of which aren't even valid. This is what viruses do when they try and locate other computers which they can infect.

Course of action: download Avast! Antivirus Home Edition immediately and schedule a boot time scan for viruses. Once completed, download Lavasoft Adaware SE personal and perform a system scan for spyware

    2) Your D:\ drive is corrupt and about to fail. It's got bad blocks and should be actioned with immediate effect. The last log for this was on the 21/01/07, so you might have reformatted the disk already, replaced it, not accessed it since then or it's a USB disk. If the D:\ drive is still in use, you should run:

    Code:
    chkdsk -f d:
    ... in a command prompt

    3) Your computer can't always locate a DHCP server. Instead, it assigns itself an APIPA IP address of 169.256.x.x, which would mean you get disconnected from the internet. If you use a laptop which doesn't always have internet access then you can ignore this. If, however, your computer should always be connected to the internet then you should check your router (if you have one)

    4) You should reinstall / repair some of your applications. It appears Microsoft Word hangs a lot on your computer. Also, I believe you have installed a Bluetooth adaptor and software. This software seems to hang every now and then and could be the cause of the computer not shutting down properly. Try uninstalling the software and restart the computer

This thread has now been resolved, Karan :) . I received a message over PM stating it was indeed the Bluetooth adaptor that was the cause of the problem.
