I have a Dell Inspiron 4000 laptop. Recently a thin, vertical, green line has appeared about two inches from left-hand edge of screen. When attached to External Monitor this does NOT appear. Dell will tell me to purchase a new screen display unit. This is v. costly for me. Anyone any information on what exactly is causing the line? Any ideas on repairs? Am reasonably literate in electronics.
There is a thin proprietary ribbon cable which connects your screen to your laptop base. These things are fragile and after opening and closing the laptop lid a few thousand times they tend to get shorted out. Although I doubt the actual screen is damaged, Dell will likely replace the whole screen rather than just the ribbon cable. Unfortuantely, there's not much you can do about it yourself that I know of.
I have removed the cable and replaced it with a similar cable. However the line on the screen still remains. So it is not the cable which is at fault. What else do you think it might be?
